Brief Bio

Marise Fernandes, is a Speech and Language Therapist (originally from Goa, India) who received her Bachelors in Speech and Language Pathology from Manchester Metropolitan University in England.  She has lived and worked in the UK, Fiji, Philippines, India and Uganda. She is a Doctoral Candidate in the CSD Dept and has taken a rather large minor in Public Health. Her main area of focus is development of socially just services for people experiencing communication disorders. She is interested in inter-professional education and collaboration, global public health theory and approaches, alternative models of service delivery, curriculum and programme development, teaching and learning, cultural linguistic diversity, paediatric feeding, and language and literacy in children.

In her qualitative dissertation she conducts and analyses interviews with Speech and Language Therapists in East Africa.  She explores with the participants their perceptions of, and vision for, culturally relevant and contextually appropriate service delivery in East Africa.
