The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at UNC Greensboro aims to prepare a diverse student body, as exemplary professionals and leaders in speech-language pathology and audiology who embody cultural humility and practice cultural responsiveness.
We believe our students, faculty, and staff should reflect our community and clientele. Sociocultural identity, beliefs, and perspectives influence communication practices and behaviors of health care providers, educators, students, and those we serve. Self-aware and culturally responsive graduates will understand how to effectively deliver services to individuals from diverse backgrounds and serve the profession. We value having a variety of cultural perspectives that enrich the learning environment and deepen knowledge, leading to increased innovation that ultimately fosters personal and professional growth.
We recognize that social systems, professional practices, and policies impact educational and healthcare contexts. Efforts centering opportunity and access include providing school-based services to underserved children in our local community, facilitating spaces for those with speech and language impairments to connect, and addressing accessibility in online and on-campus environments to optimize student success. Collaborative partnerships ensure that the needs and voices of those most impacted by our work are prioritized when working to support and advocate for individuals and communities that we serve.
We aim to establish an inclusive culture of belonging for students, faculty, and staff of diverse backgrounds to feel welcome, connected, and supported. We provide opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to participate in events to facilitate peer and mentor relationships and support engagement and understanding of cultural responsiveness. UNC Greensboro supports and encourages community building among faculty across the University through programming that includes lectures and book clubs.
